Cet article propose d’analyser les caractéristiques mais aussi les limites du lien social des usagers du secteur social français. A partir de 15 entretiens réalisés dans un hébergement accueillant des travailleurs handicapés présentant des handicaps mentaux et bénéficiant d’une orientation professionnelle avec hébergement de la COTOREP, il démontre que le rapport à l’autre des personnes en situations de handicap demeure fortement restreint et limité. En effet, celui-ci se cantonne aux connaissances du lieu de travail et du foyer d’hébergement, ponctuellement prolongé au sein de la sphère familiale. En somme, les échanges relationnels se cristallisent au sein de la bulle du secteur médico-social. Ni l’accès à l’emploi par l’intermédiaire du travail protégé, ni l’accès et l’accompagnement aux loisirs, soutenu ou non par un encadrement éducatif, ne parviennent à élargir l’horizon relationnel des usagers, « vers l’extérieur », au delà des murs institutionnels.

Limits concerning social interactions of people with intellectual disability

This paper proposes to analyze the characteristics but also the limits concerning social interactions of the people with intellectual disabilty. Interviews with 15 subjects who are living in an institutional housing, demonstrate restricted and limited social interactions. Indeed, for them, social interactions are confined to persons working in « sheltered workshops » (CAT) and/or living in the same institutional housing and occasional visits to relatives. Thus, social exchanges crystallize in the crucible of the « medico-social sector ». The fact of having a job in a work structure dedicated to people with disabilities and having access to leisure, supported or not by social workers, doesn’t contribue to expand their social relations beyond the institutional walls.
